Profile: Parks and Recreation Department responsibilities include the management of 530 acres of parks and open spaces, a traffic island beautification program and a comprehensive offering of over 400 recreation activities yearly that include opportunities for all ages and interests.

City park facilities include lighted tennis courts, lighted basketball courts, baseball/softball fields, soccer fields, playground areas, shelters, two swimming pools, two street hockey courts, and horseshoe pits. Contact the department for locations and maps.

Many of the traffic medians throughout the city have been developed, planted, and maintained with a variety of plant material that enhance the beauty of the city. Twenty-eight sites contain ground covers, ornamental grasses, annuals, and perennials.

The department's schedule of programs and activities is printed in "Your Newark City Government" newsletter. This publication is directly mailed to Newark homeowners and businesses three times each year. Activities sponsored by the department include day trips and tours, sports, fitness, crafts, dance, visual arts, nature, and special events such as Newark Community Day, Liberty Day, Newark Nite, and the Newark Halloween Parade that contribute to the sense of community and civic pride.
